Personal independence payment – claims to decisions

Personal independence payment (PIP) is a disability welfare benefit run by the Department for Work and Pensions. It is aimed at those starting a PIP claim aged between 16 to pension age.  

PIP can assist with personal care needs as well as with mobility difficulties. It is paid at various rates and is not means-tested. An award of PIP can also increase certain legacy awards that were already in place before universal credit was invented. The government has plans to replace the sickness test within universal credit with another test based on PIP, which would make PIP even more important. 

The course covers: 

• How PIP entitlement is decided
• The number of points that are needed to qualify for PIP
• How variable conditions are assessed under the PIP rules
• Whether a disabled person can do things reliably
• How a PIP claim is made using the PIP2 Questionnaire 
• Medical evidence issues
• The role of the Health Professional
• How decisions may be challenged

This training course is intended to help those new to helping claimants with social security queries and will increase awareness of this key disability benefit.
